Local housing allowance - A to Z
What is Local Housing Allowance (LHA)?
LHA is a simpler way of working out Housing Benefit for most private tenants, but not all, which started on 7 April 2008. It encourages tenants to have responsibility for their own rent and aims to give them more choice about where they live.
It uses flat rate rents, set for the area you live in, to work out your Housing Benefit and is based on the number of people in the household.
The Rent Service, who set the LHA rates every month, publish them on their website so that you can check the rate for your household.
