The Town House
Dunbar's A-listed Town House, at the heart of the High Street, is a prominent local landmark and dates from c.1650. Under the THI, it will benefit from major repairs to the roof, stonework will be repaired and replaced, repointed using lime mortar, and finally the building will also be re-harled, back to its appearance before the improvements of 1911, when the harling which originally covered the building was removed. The re-instatement of this harling is vital to protect the very soft red sandstone of which the building is constructed.
Outwith the THI, East Lothian Council are preparing plans to redevelop the interior of the building. This redevelopment is intended to provide visitors with improved and expanded museum facilities, including an education room. A lift will be installed to make the building more accessible, and new offices will be created for museum staff and the Local History Society. These improvements will help to encourage tourist visits to aid the local economy, whilst providing facilities of benefit to the whole community.
The project to carry out the external fabric repairs is programmed to commence in Year Two of the Dunbar THI, between June 2005 and June 2006, with the internal redevelopment works following on in due course.
