What is a Core Path
What is a Core Path?
Core Paths will form the basic network of paths around East Lothian, and will link into and support the wider network of other paths that already exist around the county. Core Paths could be the most popular paths and/or key routes that link communities or provide access to local sites. They may be important paths that manage public access in environmentally sensitive areas or help farmers and land managers to manage access on their land.
Core Paths can be anything from a tarmac path to a grassy field margin and this variety is important. Whilst each Core Path may not be suitable for all user groups, the Core Path system in East Lothian as a whole will provide for all types of users (walkers, cyclists and horse-riders) and people of varying abilities. Not all paths in an area will become Core Paths, but Core Paths will form the basis of East Lothian’s path network.

Core Paths will be signposted and publicised on East Lothian Council’s web site and on maps that will be available to view in all East Lothian libraries. We aim to replace any obstructions such as stiles and replace them with gates that will allow easier access. The Core Paths will also be better protected in the planning process.

“ The core paths system should provide the basic framework of routes sufficient for the purpose of giving the public reasonable access throughout their area. This basic framework of routes will link into, and support, wider networks of other paths”.
