East Lothian Council already manages and maintains many of the paths we have highlighted in this Draft Core Paths Plan. Some others are managed by private landowners or land managers through the Land Management Contract scheme or through other funding bodies. Core Paths may be anything from a tarmac path to a mown grassy field margin, and the Core Path system in East Lothian as a whole will provide for people of all abilities.

|
Core Paths will continue to be inspected and upgraded, and usage will be monitored in the future, where appropriate. The Core Paths Plan will be reviewed periodically to ensure that it continues to meet the current requirements for Core Paths. This may involve removals, diversions or additional Core Paths to be added to the Plan.

Core Paths will also benefit from protection under the planning process. Scottish Planning Policy 11 - Open Space and Physical Activity, published in November 2007, states that access rights and Core Paths are material consideration in determining applications for planning permission.
