EAST LOTHIAN HOSTS BEAUTIFUL SCOTLAND IN BLOOM!

East Lothian is proud to host the Beautiful Scotland Awards 2008 – a national celebration of communities across Scotland in recognition of their efforts to brighten up their neighbourhoods.

The Beautiful Scotland Awards (previously known as Scotland in Bloom) are organised annually by the Keep Scotland Beautiful campaign. The Awards ceremony, to be held in Brunton Hall, Musselburgh on 17 September, honours the local ‘In Bloom’ voluntary groups, Councils, and others from across the country whose efforts ensure that Scotland’s cities, towns and village communities offer a clean, bright and colourful welcome to visitors from home and abroad.

The opportunity to host this prestigious awards ceremony is an honour normally extended to those council areas whose cities and towns have previously been winners in one or more categories of the competition. North Berwick, Cockenzie and Port Seton and East Linton have all entered with varying degrees of success in previous years, culminating in North Berwick being judged overall winner in Scotland in 2007, picking up the coveted Rosebowl as well as the Coastal Category.

The annual awards attract entrants from across Scotland and the awards ceremony itself is usually attended by around 250 guests, most of whom are volunteers representing local community groups.

Acting as host authority for the 2008 Beautiful Scotland Awards is fitting recognition for the voluntary efforts of our local ‘In Bloom’ groups and the success of their partnership working with East Lothian Council over a number of years. However, the Council also sees it as an excellent opportunity to showcase East Lothian as the ‘Garden of Scotland’ and to market the area’s many attractions, both in the run-up to the event and at the awards ceremony itself.

Look out for more details here as the event draws nearer or visitwww.beautifulscotland.org.uk for more information.
