Supporting People began in 2003 as a new way of planning funding and delivering housing support services. It and seeks to encourage service delivery that:
* Is responsive to, and meets the needs of customers
* Assists customers with particular needs to live more independently
* Supports people in their own community
* Promotes social inclusion
* Is enabling
* Acheives high standards.
East Lothian's Supporting People team helps to provide support to vulnerable ternants and home owners. Information about the principles which underpin Supporting People can be found on the Scottish Executive's Supporting People Website. A public information leaflet, 'Live more independently' explains how the system works in East Lothian.
Centrally, the Scottish Executive Development Department Housing Divison is responsible for overseeing implementation. Locally the Supporting People team has been in place since July 2001. It is their job to commission housing support services and pay service providers who are delivering these services in East Lothian. Housing Support services funded through Supporting People are available to pepole with varying support needs, whether tenants or homeowners.
