There are a tremendous number of routes leading from Tranent to the neighbouring communities and connecting into longer-distance walks. These routes form a network that provides numerous circular walks of varying lengths from the town.
Many of these paths result from the history of coal mining in the area. Some are disused railway lines from the pits, whilst others are routes that were used by miners to walk to work.
Within only a short distance from the town there are magnificent views over the Firth of Forth and across Edinburgh and East Lothian. There are a number of historic buildings in the area and many opportunities to see wildlife in the fields, woods and hedgerows.
The landscape around Tranent is undulating and there are some quite steep inclines to the north and west of the town, although these should not present a problem for people who are reasonably fit. Many of the paths further out from the town can become muddy after wet weather, so stout footwear is recommended.
