Cycling Safety
- Inexperienced cyclists should use the off road routes and quiet lanes to gain confidence. On public roads other traffic will be present so cycle with care! Avoid the busiest main roads, in particular the A1 and the A198. Farm traffic should be expected on all minor roads, especially at harvest time.
- Make sure your bicycle is in good order before you set out, paying particular attention to brakes and tyres. You should also carry a basic repair kit (pump, tyre levers, screw driver and spanner), including spare inner tubes.
- Familiarise yourself with the sections of the Highway Code relevant to cycling.
- Wear bright or reflective clothing and ensure that both front and rear lights are working if you're going to be cycling at night or in poor light. It is advisable to wear a helmet.
- Ride in single file on narrow roads and no more than two abreast on other roads.
- Always look behind you and signal clearly before moving off, turning or changing lanes.
- On shared use cycle paths give proper consideration to pedestrians and people on horseback. Be prepared to slow down and stop if necessary.
- Carry a basic first-aid kit.
- If you are carrying a child in a child-seat, always make sure that he or she is securely strapped in.
