Guidance on tenants rights and duties

Whether you are a Council Tenant, rent from a Housing Association or are in a private let, these pages provide useful advice. Click on the navigation links to be taken to the appropriate page for each tenancy type. These are highlighted above and in the green navigation box on this page at the left hand side.

Council Tenants will find information on a variety of housing polices and procedures. There is also an explanation of the rules of the new tenancy agreement introduced by the Housing (Scotland) Act 2001.

Housing Association tenants can find their association's policies and procedures - or links to their association's web site.

For Private Tenants, the Private Tenants Guide, produced by Communities Scotland and Fife Council, answers many questions. The Guide can be downloaded or viewed on the Web. East Lothian Tenants and Residents groups provide support and are backed up by the Tenants Information Service.

Another useful contact is the East Lothian Tenants and Residents Panel  which liases with the Community Housing Service on housing issues. You can find out more about the Panel, and the Tenents and Residents groups it supports, here.
