Garvald to Johnscleugh

This walk starts in the village of Garvald and follows Papana Water through sheltered woodland, before climbing to almost 400 metres up into the Lammermuir Hills and across open moorland. The walk passes through a great variety of landscapes and offers fantastic views back across East Lothian.

Starting at the eastern end of the village follow the road past the church and continue along the track that loosely follows Papana Water. The path crosses the burn three times over footbridges and then climbs up towards Stoneypath Tower. Follow the farm track to the right past the farm until it reaches a quiet road. Turn right and follow the road for about a mile until it turns right between some cottages at Stoneypath. About two hundred metres further up the road a path is signed across the fields and onto the higher moors.

The total distance from Garvald to Johnscleugh is about 10½ kilometres (6½ miles). At Johnscleugh it is possible to follow the small road 5½ kilometres (3½ miles) back to Garvald.

The path from Garvald can become muddy after wet weather and the track across the Lammermuirs is a little rough. The walk involves some steep inclines and is quite remote and exposed in places, so stout footwear and waterproof clothing is recommended.

Much of this route goes through areas where grouse are reared and where sheep graze. If you have a dog please ensure that it is kept under proper control.

The Scottish Rights of Way and Access Society have signed and way-marked much of the route and this walk is detailed in their “Walking in the Lammermuir Hills” leaflet, which is available to download from the link on the right.
