Waste Services General Advice Note for Households

Wheeled Bin Collections

1. Wheeled bins must be presented on the kerbside with the handles facing the road, no later than 7am on the morning of collection.

2. Wheeled bins must not be overfilled and the lids must be fully closed when presented.

3. Wheeled bins are for general domestic waste only.

4. Loose waste (food scraps etc.) should be contained in sacks and nappies and pet excrement should be double bagged.

5. Wheeled bins should be leaned and sterilised on a regular basis.

Sack Collections

1. There are only certain properties that are permitted to utilise sacks for their domestic waste collection and these are supplied with approved sacks.

2. Sacks should not be overfilled and should be tied at the neck.

3. Sacks should be place on the kerbside no later than 7am on the morning of collection. Up to four sacks for a family of five or less and up to six sacks for a family of six or more.

Special Uplift Collections

1. When calling for a special uplift you must identify each object or number of sacks requiring collection.

2. You will be allocated a specific day or days for your collection or collections dependant upon the waste being uplifted.

3. Special uplifts must be on the kerbside for 7am on the morning of collection. Lifts left in driveways, gardens and alleyways or that are scattered and not contained will nor be collected due to manual handling regulations (Unless through prior arrangement).

4. If using sacks for special uplifts these must not be overfilled and apart from those containing garden waste, must be tied.  The sacks used must also be strong enough for the material they contain.

5. Wood with nails, screws and sharp ironmongery exposed cannot be accepted. Please either remove all nails, screws and sharp ironmongery or hammer them flat.

6. Following a garden waste collection, the sacks will be left as they can't be composted along with the garden waste collected.  However, cardboard boxes can be used for garden waste collections, as they are biodegradable and can be uplifted.

Note: Waste from builders, joiners, kitchen fitter, carpet fitter and other trades is classed as trade waste and must be removed by the individuals or company carrying out the work.  The special uplift service is not provided as a disposal route for waste produced as a result of work being carried out in households by commercial operations.

Contaminated Loads and Access Issues

1. Where collections are being made for recycling purposes (such as garden waste, scrap metal, glass or cans) contamination by other waste materials will result in the lift not being collected.

2. Where access is prevented as a result of road works, parked vehicles or other source out with the council's control the uplift will not be collected. You are asked to contact the department to arrange another suitable date.
