The East Lothian Council Archaeology Service was established in 2002. The purpose of the service is:-

  • To provide archaeological information and advice in relation to development control and other planning related matters;
  • To facilitate rescue excavations in advance of development;
  • To support and encourage research excavations and surveys;
  • To work with landownersand agri-environmental advisors to support and encourage the management of archaeological and historical sites and monuments;
  • To encourage and promote community based archaeological projects;
  • To work with others to make sure archaeology is more accessible to the wider public;
  • To encourage open days and hands on activities;
  • To work with existing interpretation centres to find ways of exploring their archaeological assets;
  • To encourage the recording of traditional and urban historical buildings before demolition or significant alteration, and; 
  • To provide and support archaeological education services to schools and youth groups. 

The East Lothian Archaeology Service maintains a Sites and Monuments Record for East Lothian and Midlothian and has been providing archaeological advice to Midlothian Council since 2003.
