Tenement Scheme
This scheme is aimed at traditional tenement buildings in the Dunbar THI area. It is intended to help groups of residents to carry out comprehansive repair schemes on the fabric or exterior of historic buildings and consequently to enhance the surrounding townscape.
Works covered under this grant programme include repairs to stonework, re-roofing, chimney repairs, and re-installing traditional sash and case windows.
Some repair and enhancement works to ground-floor shops in such properties may also qualify where it improves the overall appearance of the building –for instance re-painting a traditional-style shop front which needs no major improvement works.
How much is available?
Total grant awards for this scheme vary, and will depend upon the total costs for works. Funding will come from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Historic Scotland Town Scheme and East Lothian Council Housing Development Services.
It is recommended that tenement owners employ the services of a building surveyor to guide them through the process to ensure the works are done to the required standard.
What projects have been completed so far?
One project has been completed under this grant programme to date. This is at 4 Lawson Place, a former back lane behind Dunbar’s High Street. A comprehensive scheme of repairs and refurbishment works was carried out including the following grant eligible items:

Reroofing in Scotch slate

New lead flashings and zinc ridges to the roof

Replacement of rooflights with ‘Conservation Rooflights’ by Velux

Rebuilding chimneys in brick with stone copes and new chimneypots

Renewing cast-iron guttering and downpipes

Indenting new stone (Locharbriggs sandstone) as required

New stone cills and lintels as required

Repointing in lime mortar on all elevations

Replacing six non-timber windows with sash and case windows to match originals

Repainting gutters, downpipes and timberwork.
