Registration of births deaths marriages and civil partnerships
Registration of Births, Deaths Marriages and Civil Partnerships is a statutory service provided on behalf of the Registrar General for Scotland under The Registration of Births, Deaths and Marriages (Scotland) Act 1965, The Marriage (Scotland) Act 1977 The Marriage (Scotland) Act 2002 and The Civil Partnership Act 2004.
The staff within the registration service are employed by local authorities, but the work which they undertake is directed by the General Register Office for Scotland.
Registrars maintain registers of births, still-births, deaths, marriages and civil partnerships. They also conduct civil marriages and civil partnership ceremonies. You can have your ceremony at the Register Office of your choice or it is possible to hold a ceremony in any licenced venue in Scotland. Civil ceremonies now take place in hotels, stately homes, civic buildings and other suitable venues, which have been licenced by your local authority. If you want an up-to-date list of licenced premises in your area please contact your local Registration Office.
There are 6 offices located throughout East Lothian. Registration is performed at all of these offices. You may register at any office within the East Lothian area (Please select your local office on the right).
East Lothian Council registration service operates an appointments system. Anyone wishing to register a birth, death, marriage or civil partnership at any office in East Lothian should call the relevant registrar to arrange an appointment.
