East Lothian’s connections with its North Sea neighbours are being strengthened through participation in the European funded NAVE Nortrail transnational project.
NAVE Nortrail brings together two of the strongest attractions for tourists in East Lothian – outdoor activities and the county’s beautiful natural environment and heritage.
Walking tourism and its associated economic spending power is significant. In 2003 it was the main activity undertaken during a UK holiday generating over £92.4 million.
However, recent research has shown that most people prefer to walk on way marked trails with good infrastructure, and with easy access to facilities where they are assured of a friendly welcome.
Businesses can capture this growing market by welcoming walkers and taking simple steps to cater for them, for example:
-
Providing information on the paths and heritage of the coastal region including the John Muir Way
-
Working with others to make business connections and networks in order to meet the needs of walkers of the North Sea Trail
-
Providing facilities in demand by walkers e.g. packed lunches, drying facilities, etc.
-
Joining initiatives such as ‘Walker’s Welcome’ - VisitScotland’s quality assurance scheme for accommodation providers.
