Introduction to Planning and Building Standards
We all want our local environment to be a safe, pleasant place to live in. We want good roads, quiet streets, shops near at hand, offices and factories to give us jobs, and houses in which to live. We want these buildings to be well-built and safe to use. Planning and Building Standards try to make sure that we have these things, and that our lives are not made unpleasant by smells, noise, eyesores, heavy traffic, unsafe buildings and so on. At the same time the legitimate needs of the development industry have to be accommodated, and the processes of land use change that are a part of our society managed.

In East Lothian, Planning and Building Standards is part of the Council's Environment Department. It is made up of 3 sections; Development Control, Building Standards, and Policy & Projects (including Development Plans).
