East Lothian is located in the southeast of Scotland, neighbouring the capital city of Edinburgh. The award-winning coastline stretches along the southern edge of the Firth of Forth to the boundaries of the Scottish Borders.

There are frequent public transport services by bus and rail to the coast and hinterland.

Edinburgh Airport is 8 miles (12 km) west of the city.  Glasgow, Glasgow Prestwick and Newcastle airports are all within easy reach of East Lothian.

There are also regular ferries to Rosyth in nearby Fife, and Newcastle serving the countries of the North Sea.
