More than half of the Council's housing has been 'lost' since the right to buy was introduced and the Council 'stock' stands at just over 8000. Until recently ELC has not been allowed to replace these houses. Housing Associations have made up some of the shortfall, but there are around 8500 fewer houses available for rent than in 1980.
Meanwhile, East Lothian has become a popular place to live. There is pressure on both Council and Housing Association housing lists. Sought after house types can be hard to find and waiting times for these can can stretch for decades. The Council is aware of the shortage, but it will take time to address it.
Because of the shortage it is unwise to rely on getting your first choice of house type, or area. You should check the availability of properties in the area(s) you want, by seeking help from housing officers in the local office.
Please note that the Council's housing allocation policy, has recently changed. Our new policy has been agreed after wide ranging consultation and you can find out more about that, by going here.
