Documents to be produced
|
When giving or sending the marriage notice forms to the registrar each person must supply –
- your birth certificate
- if you have been married before and the marriage has been dissolved, a certificate of divorce or annulment or a certified copy decree. A decree of divorce granted outwith Scotland must be absolute or final – a decree nisi is not acceptable and there may also be additional information required.
- if you are a widow or widower, the death certificate or your former spouse.
- if you and the person you are marrying are related in any of the Degrees of Relationship, death certificates are required for the persons mentioned in footnote (b).
- if you live abroad it may be necessary to produce additional documentation issued by the competent authority in that country – check with the registrar.
- if any of these documents is in a language other than English, a certified translation in English must also be provided.
- New Immigration rules for getting marriad in the UK were introduced on 1 February 2005. People being married on or after that date are now required to provide proof that they have satisfied immigration requirements or provide proof of their nationality in addition to any other relevant documents listed in the "Marriage in Scotland" leaflet. Further information may be found on the General Register Office website.
- All documents must be originals, photocopies are not acceptable.
