Assistance if you are Homeless

East Lothian Council helps people who are homeless or in danger of homelessness. The assistance offered varies with personal circumstances.

If you think you may be homeless or would like advice to prevent homelessness, call the Response team within the Homelessness unit on: 0800 169 1611. During office hours you can make an appointment with a Response Officer. The team is accessed via reception at 6-8, Lodge Street, Haddington and office hours are: Monday to Thursday 9-5, Friday 9-4.

0800 169 1611 is also the emergency number for contact after office hours if you have nowhere to stay. Our staff can organise temporary accommodation for you. A Response Officer will see you, once you are in temporary accommodation and provide advice and information.

Other agencies can advise you or take up your case, with the Council or a landlord. These range from specialists, such as Women's Aid, to generalist advice and advocacy agencies like Shelter. In addition our website offers information for Homeless families  about education, healthcare and support services.

Homeowners who are falling behind with their mortgage payments and who fear they may become homeless may be eligible for the Mortgage to Rent scheme.
