Born the second of ten children in Sidegate, Haddington in 1811, John Martine was a member of an old Haddington family. His father and grandfather, tanners by trade, were both also postmaster and provost in their time. John himself ran a brewing business in Sidegate, before inheriting the farm of Morhambank, but in 1875 he left Haddington to settle in Edinburgh. In 1890 he published his 'Reminiscences and Notices of Fourteen Parishes of the County of Haddington'. He died the following year and a second volume, 'Reminiscences and Notices of Ten Parishes of the County of Haddington' was published posthumously. These two titles are here combined in one volume, arranged by parish in one alphabetical sequence. With the addition of an index and illustrations this work offers a treasure trove of information about people, places and events in East Lothian.
