In August 1797 twelve people were killed and twenty wounded by soldiers trying to control a recruiting meeting at Tranent, East Lothian, less than ten miles from Edinburgh. These deaths occurred in broad daylight, and involved a number of victims who had not even been in the town at the time. They included a little boy who was decapitated. Not one of the soldiers responsible was brought to court ...
