Erich Hoyt
North Berwick-based conservationist and whale researcher Erich Hoyt readily admits that he has never ‘had a regular job.’ That does not, however, mean he has been idle. Besides writing fifteen books on the natural world (so far) he speaks at conferences, organises workshops, conducts scientific work on orcas in Kamchatka, Russia, and undertakes worldwide conservation campaigns, as well as lecturing at some of the world’s most prestigious universities.
It would not be a step too far to argue that he is a modern equivalent of East Lothian’s very own John Muir. Indeed, his journey can be viewed as the mirror image of Muir’s – from North America to East Lothian as opposed to East Lothian to North America. And whilst their areas of research differ (the sea v the land) their ultimate goal, saving some parts of the planet for our children, is the same.
In these times when saving the planet is such an important aspect of all our lives it is an honour to have such a respected conservationist living in East Lothian.
