Normally, external maintenance work does not require planning permission; for example, re-painting, re-pointing brickwork, re-roofing. Also, planning permission is not required for any internal alterations to a building, including a house. However, there are exceptions to the rule. Listed buildings and properties within a Conservation Area are the most important exceptions. To find out more about East Lothian's 26 Conservation Areas or to check whether you live within a conservation area go to Conservation Areas page . To find out more about listed buildings or to check whether your building is listed check Historic Scotland's web site.
