Joint arrangements are in place with the City of Edinburgh Council to provide this service to children and young people in East Lothian on a peripatetic, outreach basis.

The aims of the Service are to provide, informed support for children with a visual impairment, their families and other professionals in order to enhance the quality of the pupil's learning experience and educational provision

In carrying out this aim, staff undertake to:

  • establish child, school and family needs by providing consultancy services
  • offer advice and support to class/subject teachers on curriculum planning, preparation of materials, alternative teaching strategies, use of ICT and adaptation of the learning environment
  • contribute to programmes and planning, joint monitoring, review and recording procedures where appropriate
  • contribute to staff development and training for staff in both mainstream and specialist settings
  • liaise with other agencies and professionals to develop effective lines of communication
  • provide advice and support for parents or carers and to raise awareness of the implications of a visual impairment
  • provide direct teaching of specific skills such as Braille and mobility
  • provide advice on the provision of suitable specialist resources and assist in the preparation of materials

The service operates an open referral system and psychologists and / or health professionals can refer children at any time.
