What the police can do
Family Protection Units

The creation of Family Protection Units recognises the fact that violence against or abuse of one family member can affect others in the family and, in particular, that domestic abuse can and does impact directly and indirectly on the lives of children and young people. It allows for improved sharing of information between the separate police disciplines, the aim being to develop a more co-ordinated approach.
Lothian and Borders Police is currently setting up a networked database for the Family Protection Units to facilitate the sharing of information in the light of the links between domestic abuse and child abuse and the impact that family violence can have on children and young people.
