Private water supply

Private water supplies

A "private water supply" is, any supply of water, which is not provided by Scottish Water. A water supply which is in private ownership in East Lothian will be sourced from a borehole, spring, or be a collection of surface water from the hill, or a combination of spring and surface water collection. Private water supplies are, by their nature, at risk from contamination. The contamination may result in waterborne bacteria affecting the supply or be chemical in origin - for example from deteriorated water supply pipes and equipment or agricultural activity.

As part of the Private Water Supplies (Scotland) Regulations 2006, the Council must keep a register of the private water supplies in the area. Sampling is carried out to assess the chemical and microbiological quality of the water.

In East Lothian, there are what's known as 7 type A and 36 type B supplies. The definitions of type A and B are detailed on the next page.

If you have any questions about private water supplies, grants or water quality standards, please contact the Council for more information or log on to www.privatewatersupplies.gov.uk
