Street Naming and Numbering
Street naming and numbering procedures
Under Section 97 of the Civic Government (Scotland) Act 1982, the responsibility for street naming, numbering of properties in new developments and new buildings within existing streets falls to the Council's Policy & Projects team.
The issuing of a new street name is the subject of consultation with the local community councils and Councillors. Where possible, any recommendations/suggestions made will be linked to local historical names or those in keeping with existing names within the surrounding areas, and local historical societies may also be consulted. Councillors' recommendations will be used.
At the end of this consultation, the Council will advise relevant parties (eg the emergency services, utility companies, Royal Mail, Ordnance Survey, General Register Office, various Council departments). Royal Mail will then allocate a postcode to the property.
Developers should contact the team at least two months before completion of a new development so that street naming and numbering can be provided. Individual property owners should also contact the team if they wish to change or add a name to a house.
