Street furniture

The repair and maintenance of street furniture within East Lothian

The responsibility for providing and maintaining street furniture in East Lothian Council is shared between the Transportation Division and Landscape and Countryside Management.

The Transportation Division is responsible for:

  • most illuminated and non-illuminated signs and bollards
  • street lighting columns
  • permanent traffic signals and variable message signs
  • safety fencing
  • guard rails
  • grit bins
  • road gullies
  • traffic counter boxes
  • bus shelters
  • cycle tracks

Landscape and Countryside Management are responsible for:

  • litter and dog bins
  • seating
  • planters and baskets

Water, gas, electricity and telephone companies (statutory undertakers) are also permitted to place equipment within the road boundary:

  • telephone/electricity poles and cabinets
  • mobile phone masts
  • fire hydrants
  • manholes
  • valve markers

Temporary traffic signals and traffic management around road works sites are the responsibility of the contractor carrying out the work.

Every site should display a board with the contractor's details and a 24 hour contact number.
