Respite care for adult carers

Respite breaks for carers

Being a carer can be a rewarding experience. It can also be emotional, time-consuming, and physically demanding. You may find that your caring responsibilities mean you are unable to participate in leisure activities, attend appointments or take a much needed break.

If you are a carer you may be entitled to respite services. Respite breaks are useful if you or the person you care for are finding it difficult to cope and would benefit from a bit of 'time out'.

This is why respite services can be important for you, as well as the person you care for.

What is respite?

Respite can either take place in through a temporary placement in a residential home, or we can arrange a qualified agency worker to visit your home.

Either option will allow you and the person you care for to have a holiday or a break for a few hours during the week.

Respite services are available following an assessment of your needs, as well as the person that you care for.

For more information on respite in a residential home, you can download a copy of our respite care in residential homes leaflet.

Additional support

There are a number of other support organisations and networks in East Lothian to help carers. Carers of East Lothian offers advocacy and advice services, as well as offering social events where you can meet people in similar circumstances.

For more information visit our advocacy for carers and carers support group sections.

You may also want to have a more formal programme of carers support put in place, following a carers assessment. More information is available for this from our carers support section.

Assessment, eligibility and charging for services

We use assessments to make sure our recommendations are appropriate, will address your needs and meet our eligibility criteria. To find out more about this, and our charging policy, please read our assessment of need section.

For more information about respite care and for an assessment, please get in touch, our contact details are shown at the foot of this page.
