Wildlife laws

Virtually all plant and animal life is protected to some degree by legislation. If, for example, you are thinking about carrying out some work on a tree, consider whether the tree is protected, what bird and animal may be using it as a home and what will be the best time of year to conduct any work?

Ignorance is not seen as an excuse for anyone who harms plants and animals. A full breakdown of the aspects of wildlife law can be found at http://www.snh.org.uk/publications/on-line/wildlife/law/default.asp and a summary PDF is available at http://www.snh.org.uk/pdfs/publications/wildlife/wildlifelaw.pdf

Controlling your dog

Exercising your dog is one of the great pleasures to be enjoyed in East Lothian’s Countryside. But please exercise your dog responsibly and don’t disturb either other site visitors or the local wildlife. A summary of responsible dog behaviour is available from Scottish Natural Heritage at; http://www.snh.gov.uk/docs/C233791.pdf
