We are currently unable to provide replacement certificates unless they are required for Universal Credit or other benefits. You can order replacement certificates from the National Record of Scotland if the event occurred in Scotland.

If the birth, death or marriage was registered in East Lothian since 1855, or if the civil partnership was registered in East Lothian since 2005, you may obtain a certificate through the East Lothian Registration Service. It may also be possible to obtain a certificate for an event registered anywhere in Scotland (between 1855-to year preceding current year).

To obtain a certificate it is helpful to know:

  • full names
  • date of the event
  • where the event took place

Select from the dropdown menu: "Copies of Birth Certificate etc" from the list, then select "Births, Deaths, Marriages", choose the type of certificate you want and complete the online form.

Costs and delivery

The cost of certificates bought within 1 month of registration is £10. For all other extracts the cost is £15.

All payments outwith the United Kingdom should be in sterling in the form of an international money order or banker's draft.

Certificates are normally sent within 5 working days by second class mail but temporarily due to staff shortages this could take up to 15 working days. Delivery usually takes another 2-3 business days

Adopted children

Copies of birth certificates for adopted children are only available from National Records of Scotland, New Register House, Edinburgh EH13 3YT.
