Council tax

Reduction reviews

The Council must review all discounts and exemptions in order to ensure that there is still entitlement.

The discount and exemption review process is started by the issue of a review form, which has a section for you to complete sign and return.

This form asks you to confirm you are still entitled to the discount or to give details about when and why the discount or exemption should stop.

For empty discounts and exemptions, in addition to the return of the review form, a council tax officer may visit the property to confirm that the reduction is still appropriate.

If the original discount or exemption review form is not completed or returned within the timescale requested, the reduction will be terminated and a bill issued for the full charge. It is therefore important not to ignore the review form.

If you have mislaid the original review form, you can tell us why you think the reduction is still applicable by selecting the following link: complete a review form.

Important information about Universal Credit

From 23rd March 2016, Universal Credit has been extended in East Lothian to include ALL new claimants of working age.

If you are of working age and were intending to make a new claim for housing benefit, you may now be required to claim help towards your housing costs as part of your Universal Credit claim.

You will NOT be able to claim for help with your council tax as part of your Universal Credit claim.  You MUST make a separate claim to East Lothian Council for this.

You can make a claim for council tax reduction online.
