Healthy eating in schools

Food and health development

The Scottish diet is largely deficient in fruit and vegetables and, at a national level, Scotland does not meet the World Health Organisation's recommended adult daily intake of five portions of fruit and vegetables.

To address this, East Lothian Council and NHS Lothian jointly fund a food and health development officer, who provides children and the community with information and advice to enable them to make healthier choices, including regularly eating fruit and vegetables.

The officer also supports a number initiatives within the community, for example:

  • health fairs
  • working with the ELC Scotland's Healthy Working Lives group to improve the health and well-being of employees
  • developing, in consultation with other stakeholders, Council policy on food and health
