Tennis Scotland awards top prize to East Lothian

At the Tennis Scotland awards 2012 the East Lothian Open won the Tournament of the Year award for an unprecedented second year running.

Tennis Scotland stated "The 2011 Tennis Scotland Tournament of the Year continues to grow and improve now with nearly 400 entries from across the country, providing events for all ages from 8U up to 55+ and a hugely popular wheelchair event. This family friendly tournament is run by an enthusiastic group of welcoming volunteers and with social events on every evening of the tournament, the East Lothian Open remains the benchmark for tournaments in Scotland."

Cabinet Member for Community Wellbeing, Cllr Tim Day, said:

"This is a tremendous achievement for the organisers of this tournament which continues to grow each successive year. I have enjoyed attending some of the matches and know that players and spectators thoroughly enjoy the atmosphere, locations and excellent organisation of the tournament."

In a recent interview Andy Murray spoke about his early career playing local tournaments including at Edinburgh's Waverley Club and the East Lothian Open. In fact, he joked that competing in East Lothian had played a part in his US Open triumph. "In this year's US Open final and semis there were hurricanes and tornadoes around - pretty similar to when I played at North Berwick and I guess that probably helped me at the US Open!"

Runners-up of the Tournament of the Year were The Nairn Tennis Championships, The South of Scotland Championships.
