Parents vote for 'status quo' in Haddington schools ballot
Parents of pupils at Haddington Infants and King's Meadow Primary schools in Haddington have voted overwhelmingly in favour of retaining the current management structure for the schools - namely two separate schools each with its own head teacher. The ballot was the conclusion of an extensive consultation exercise with parents to gauge their views on the possibility of reviewing management of both schools.
In June 2012, Don Ledingham, the Executive Director of Services for People, met with representatives of both schools' Parent Councils to discuss this possibility. Mr. Ledingham explained that an opportunity to review the management of both schools had arisen due to the imminent retirement of the head teacher of King's Meadow Primary. The parents were asked to consider two options as an alternative to replacing the head teacher - One head teacher leading a single, merged school; and One head teacher leading both schools, with the schools retaining their own separate identities.
A full consultation exercise was carried out with all parents at both schools receiving a ballot paper to register their preference. The results of the ballot were declared today (1 February 2013).
Cllr Shamin Akhtar, Cabinet Member for Education and Children's Services, said:
I am extremely grateful to the parents of both schools for their interest and participation in this exercise. The ballot results clearly show a strong preference to retain the current arrangements of two separate schools each with its own head teacher and so the council will now proceed with the recruitment process for a new head teacher for King's Meadow primary.
