Museums collections to benefit from new specialised storage

East Lothian Council Museums Service has been awarded £14,616 in capital funding by Museums Galleries Scotland which will be used to purchase specialist display equipment. The Museums Service cares for more than 15,000 objects with many on display at the museums across the county. Objects not currently on show are stored within the dedicated environmentally controlled museum store in Haddington.

Cabinet Member for Community Wellbeing, Cllr Tim Day said:

“I am delighted that Museums Galleries Scotland have made this significant award to East Lothian Council. It will enable the many fascinating and delicate objects from the museum collection to be stored in much more suitable racking ensuring that we can care for these artefacts in perpetuity.”

The funding will be used to purchase dedicated wardrobe racking for costumes and hats, drawers for the archaeology collection and deep shelving for the natural history objects.  The project will result in more efficient use of space and time and allow for a revision of the collection database.

The team of Collections Volunteers will be very much involved with the relocation of objects once the racking is installed. They will receive training from the Collections Officer for re-hanging stored garments, repacking and storing the archaeology and natural history collections. In addition they will update all relevant accompanying documentation to required museum standard. The Museums service would be delighted to hear from anyone interested in becoming a volunteer. All objects housed in the museums store are accessible for viewing for personal research by prior appointment with the Collections Officer. Please see http://www.eastlothianmuseums.org/content/pages/collections.php for more information.
