Events for all the family to enjoy at John Muir Birthplace and Prestongrange Museum

This weekend (17-18 May), it’s going to be a wild one for families visiting John Muir’s Birthplace or Prestongrange Museum. Inspired by John Muir, both museums are hosting an event for children aged 6 and under and their families to discover a love of nature, animals and the outdoors.

Both events run from 1-4pm, on Saturday at John Muir’s Birthplace, and on Sunday at Prestongrange Museum.

The weekend offers a host of activities designed for little ones including imaginative play sessions by 1 Red Elephant featuring storytelling, songs and balloon animal making. There will be animal handling sessions with Cool Creatures to introduce young children to a range of different animals including snakes, skunks, meerkats and more.

East Lothian’s Countryside Rangers will also be at both events, with activities about the seashore in Dunbar, and woodland at Prestongrange. Families can also make their own nature-inspired arts and crafts, led by the Borders Environmental Education Services, creating leaf garlands, tree faces, and stick figures. At John Muir’s Birthplace, families will be able to explore the museum to discover more about John Muir, who came from Dunbar, and went on to found the National Parks in America, and often wrote about his love of ‘all things wild’.

At Prestongrange, families can take part in a buggy-friendly nature trail and visit the exhibition ‘Wild Prestongrange’, all about the animals, plants and nature around the site. Older siblings are welcome to attend these events with their families, although activities will be designed for children aged 6 and under.

Families can drop by to either event and there is a suggested donation of £2 per family or group. These events are part funded by Museums Galleries Scotland and are part of the Festival of Museums weekend (16-18 May). For more information see www.festivalofmuseums.com
