Beware of cold callers offering new boilers under Green Deal scheme

Published Wednesday 22nd October 14

Cold calling- Don't buy it

Trading standards officers are warning households in East Lothian to be wary if cold callers offer a new boiler for free under the Government’s Green Deal scheme.

The Green Deal is a genuine scheme, but some companies are asking customers for an upfront fee of up to £300.

Households have reported that they never actually get the boiler and instead have paid for an expensive assessment that is given for free by other providers. If you would like to know more about the official range of support available for home heating and insulation, please contact the local energy team on 0808 808 2282

Tony McAuley, East Lothian Council’s Trading Standards Manager, said:

“We very strongly advise against ever doing business with cold callers, and if you are asked for payment in relation to the Green Deal scheme to simply refuse. Never hand over payment or pass on personal or financial details to traders who have contacted you out of the blue. Do not do business on the doorstep without checking first that they are from a legitimate company and can actually provide what they are verbally offering. If you have any doubts, please contact East Lothian Trading Standards on 01620 827365.”
