Anti-Social Behaviour Order for Tranent resident

Published Monday 6th February 17

A 40 year old man has been banned for 24 months from disturbing his neighbours by acting in an anti-social manner in and around his Tranent flat.

An Anti-Social Behaviour Order was (ASBO) was granted by Edinburgh Sherriff Court on Monday 31 January against Graeme Smith of Coal Neuk Court, Tranent, following an application from East Lothian Council. The terms of the ASBO prevent him from behaving in a way that causes or is likely to cause alarm and distress to others. This includes allowing more than two visitors at any one time; shouting and swearing, or allowing or encouraging anyone else to shout and swear within the property; and playing televisions and any other sound making devices excessively loud.

The court was told that complaints against Mr Smith dated back to August 2016. East Lothian Council’s Safer Communities Team worked closely with Police Scotland to compile the dossier of evidence that was presented to the court.

A council spokesperson said:

“Mr Smith’s behaviour resulted in a number of complaints being made to Police Scotland and the Safer Communities Team. We always take such complaints very seriously, and we will not hesitate in pursuing legal action in order to ensure that East Lothian residents are not subjected to behaviour that causes them alarm and distress.”

Andrew Harborow, Community Inspector for Tranent, said:

"Police Scotland takes complaints about anti-social behaviour seriously. I am very aware of the detrimental effect it can have on the quality of life of members of the community. We work very closely with East Lothian Council Anti-social Behaviour team to ensure an effective response to reports of ASB. I welcome the granting of this ASBO and I can assure the community this ASBO will be rigorously enforced by ourselves in support of ELC ASB team.”
