John Muir Way Ultra Marathon in East Lothian this weekend
Published Friday 31st March 17
After the huge success of the inaugural John Muir Way Ultra Marathon last year, the event returns even bigger and better for the 2017 season on Saturday April 1st.
The John Muir Way Ultra Marathon will see competitors from all over UK and Europe take on 50km/30miles of stunning East Lothian coastline, country paths and woodland trails, showcasing the incredible scenery the county has to offer.
The race begins at the Port Seton Promenade and largely follows the John Muir Way through Aberlady, Archerfield Walled Garden, North Berwick, Balgone Estate and East Linton with the route finishing at Foxlake Adventures, Dunbar.
The inaugural John Muir Way Ultra Marathon proved to be a huge success amongst the Scottish trail running fraternity and this success has helped double the race entries for 2017 with 300 runners expected to be taking part on Saturday 1st of April, with runners travelling from as far as Holland to take part.
The John Muir Ultra Marathon is a truly inclusive event which welcomes long distance runners of all abilities with times for the 50km race varying from 3 hours 30 mins to 6 hours 30 mins, ensuring that the start line has a strong mix of ages and abilities.
Race Director James Barbour, of Foxlake Adventures, said:
Sounding the starter bell on Saturday will be East Lothian Council Chief Executive Angela Leitch who said:
"After the huge success of the inaugural John Muir Way Ultra Marathon that we organised last year, we have been delighted with the response with more than double the number of runners competing this year. There is no greater way to showcase the stunning natural beauty and diversity we enjoy in East Lothian than running the John Muir Trail and we feel that our event is a new and unique addition to the Ultra race calendar. Without the tremendous support that we have received from East Lothian Council both this year and last, the event would simply not be possible and the opportunity to promote East Lothian as a top trail running destination would be lost. The JMW Ultra is the only major trail or road race of a similar distance that is contained exclusively within the county and is focused solely on the promotion of East Lothian."

“I am very happy to have been asked to start this incredible race on Saturday. The first John Muir Way Ultra Marathon last year was a great success and the team at Foxlake, along with support from the council’s economic development team, have managed to attract double the number of participants for this year’s event, which is a great achievement. I take my hat off to the 300 runners who will be tackling the 50 kilometre course. I hope these elite athletes will find the scenery around our beautiful coastline and our welcoming residents help speed them along to the finish line. This is a great event for East Lothian and one the council is happy to support.”
