Join the community conversation at North Berwick

North Berwick

Residents and visitors to the North Berwick Coastal Area will soon have the opportunity to give their views on what would make North Berwick a great place to get around.

North Berwick Coastal Area Partnership has commissioned Kevin Murray Associates to carry out a formal consultation design process called a Charrette, which will include discussions and workshops where local people will get the chance to work together to develop and test ideas that may make the town centre work better for everybody.

There will be an opportunity to look at a number of issues including access for all, parking, and community transport to help identify practical solutions that will meet community needs. People will also be asked about pedestrian safety, how to make it easier to get around the town if they are walking or cycling, and whether there is a need for some local community transport, such as a wander bus circulating in the town. The aim is to build a consensus, using local knowledge and views from the whole community, on the best way to deliver change. This information will then feed into the Local Area Plan and Local Transportation Strategy.

There will be a community launch on Tuesday 30 May, town centre walks on Thursday 1 June, an ideas testing workshop on Friday 2 June and an action planning workshop on Saturday 3 June.

A short survey is also being distributed across the North Berwick Coastal area which asks local people to consider and complete the following questions:

• North Berwick Town Centre would be perfect for me if…
• If I could make one improvement for North Berwick Town Centre, it would be…
• And I hope that in 10 years time North Berwick Centre will …

The survey is also available online at http://bit.ly/2oPAyi4, and a Facebook page entitled ‘North Berwick Town Centre Charrette’ has also been specially created.

The Charrette was commissioned by North Berwick Coastal Area Partnership as a result of the views expressed at various community conversation events, and is funded by East Lothian Council and the Scottish Government Charrette Mainstreaming Programme.

Kevin Murray of Kevin Murray Associates said:

“This is a great opportunity to explore ideas about how to make North Berwick an even more fun, accessible and enjoyable place to be. We look forward to working with people with all sorts of ideas and interests. Please don't hold back - come and give us your suggestions and let's see what we can create together.”
