A planning application for a new primary school in Wallyford has been formally approved at a meeting of East Lothian Council.

The £18.6m phase one of the new school, being built as part of the new St Clements Wells development on the outskirts of the village, was approved at a planning meeting of East Lothian Council on Wednesday 29 March. Hub South East, East Lothian Council’s Development Partner, will be delivering the project and has appointed Morrison Construction as the preferred contractor.  The new school should be complete by autumn 2018.

The new school, which will replace the existing school building at Salters Road, will initially provide 28 classrooms, as well as 120 pre-school places. A further phase to be developed later could see space constructed for an eventual primary and pre-school roll of more than 1,300, one of the biggest primary schools in the county.

Richard Park, Hub South East’s Operations Director said:

“The new Wallyford Primary is a huge investment in education by East Lothian Council so It’s fantastic to reach the key milestone of planning approval, meaning we can now work with our partners in the Council to focus on making these plans a reality.

“Our contractor, Morrison Construction, should start work on site in the summer, and in Autumn next year, pupils and staff will have a new modern, fit-for-purpose learning environment, whilst local residents will be able to enjoy new community facilities such as a games hall and library.”

Fiona Robertson, Head of Education at East Lothian Council, said:

“The results of the consultation that was undertaken in 2016 showed that parents and carers were overwhelmingly supportive of the proposal to relocate Wallyford Primary School to a new site. A new school and facilities will not only provide the best learning environment possible for local children, but it will also benefit all members of the local community.”
