Signs - Road closed and diversion

Nearly 2,000 athletes will compete in this weekend’s Ironman 70.3 Edinburgh, a triathlon race that consists of a 1.2 mile swim at Gosford Sands, a 56 mile bike ride through East Lothian, followed by a half marathon in Holyrood Park, Edinburgh.

There will be a number of road closures in place to facilitate the event. The council has worked closely with event organisers to ensure that disruption to residents will be kept to a minimum.

Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Tourism, Cllr John McMillan, said:

“Ironman is an internationally recognised series of events that attracts competitors and spectators from across the globe. The opportunity to position East Lothian as a leading attraction for major sporting events will result in benefits to the local economy particularly to tourism and hospitality businesses.

The council promotes careful planning by organisers for such a large event.  Organisers must demonstrate that risks have been considered and effective traffic management plans have been proposed in order to maximise safety for participants, spectators and the residents of our area.  Such safety measures will inevitably involve some temporary disruptions to local communities which we, and other partners including Police Scotland and the event organisers, try to keep to a minimum.

Event organisers have held public sessions and had discussions with local residents through the community councils to keep them informed about event preparations and road closures and, as is common practice, a ‘de-brief’ will be held after the event to detail any concerns for improvements that could be put in place for any future similar events.”
