Joint our wonderful team

Making the everyday possible for East Lothian families

This September, we are asking people in East Lothian to think about giving a little time and making a big difference to disabled children and their families. We are looking for more people to join our wonderful team of Share the Carers who offer regular short breaks to disabled children giving their parents a break from caring.

Share-the Care's Leann Robinson says:

'Children benefit so much from spending time with a Share the Carer, meeting people outside their immediate family circle and trying the things parent carers cannot get around to do due to meeting their child’s needs. There are no specific qualifications required but personal qualities such as patience, understanding, enthusiasm and commitment are all essential. Ideally, people will have some experience of caring for children.'

One of our regular Share the Carers adds:

‘I’ve been with Share the Care for three years now and I feel it’s really rewarding getting to know the children, really bonding with them and doing lots of different activities. It also time for their families to relax or spend time with their other children.’

We really value our Share the Carers and want to make sure that they get the support they need and the recognition they deserve.  We do this by providing  support from an experienced Social Worker, carer payment and allowances towards mileage, refreshments and activity costs.  We also provide opportunities for learning and development.

As part of East Lothian Share the Care Month 2017, our team will have a stand at the Kidz to Adultz event at the Royal Highland Centre,  Edinburgh EH28 8NB on  Thursday 14th September 2017 from  9.30am – 4.30pm, so why not drop in for a chat.

You can also hear us on local radio and there’ll be lots of information, videos and interviews about what we’re up to on the East Lothian Council and East Lothian Health and Social Care Partnership’s Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter accounts. This is all leading up to a big information event for people interested in Share the Care at Musselburgh East Community Learning Centre on 4 October for 18:00 – 19:30– check for event on social media.

East Lothian Council Education and Children’s Services spokesperson Councillor Shamin Akhtar says:

‘We have a fantastic team of Share the Carers in East Lothian – they are the most thoughtful, caring and supportive people you could ever hope to meet and I cannot thank them enough. Their help makes the everyday possible for a lot of families.

'We do need more people to come forward though. The number of children, young people and families needing this sort of help is growing. Share the Carers transform the lives of everyone they work with – and their lives are transformed in turn.

'If you think this is something you could do, please pick up the phone and give Leann and the team a ring as soon as you can.

'If you want to find out more about Share the Care now, give Leann Robinson a ring on 01875 824 309 or email disabilityteam@eastlothian.gov.uk.'
