Education Scotland inspectors praise Haddington school

St Mary's RC Primary School in Haddington

Inspectors have praised the strong leadership of the head teacher at St Mary’s RC Primary School and Nursery Class, as well as the quality of its learning, teaching and assessment.

A new report from Education Scotland found a number of strengths in the work of the Haddington school including:

  • The development of a highly inclusive and nurturing ethos

  • Effective teamwork across staff – helping to improve outcomes for children

  • An impressive climate of mutual respect – contributing to a learning environment where children feel safe and cared for

It follows a visit by to the school in May when inspectors looked at evidence to evaluate the quality of leadership and management, learning provision and children’s success and achievements. They also spoke to parents/carers and children and worked closely with the head teacher and staff.

Councillor Shamin Akhtar, Cabinet Spokesperson for Education and Children’s Services, said: 

“This is an excellent report which recognises the strong leadership in place at St Mary’s and the work of staff in improving a range of outcomes for children.

“I’d like to congratulate the staff and pupils for all their hard work, which is reflected in Education Scotland’s findings. It shows that there are strong, positive relationships in the school and recognises the involvement of children in identifying their strengths and next steps in learning.

“I’m delighted to see that the effective use of the outdoors as a stimulating learning environment in the early learning and childcare setting has been identified, as well as the school’s successful approach to the teaching of writing – inspiring many children across the primary stages to produce work of a high quality.

“The report also suggests areas for improvement, which I am confident will enable it to go from strength to strength.”

The following areas for improvement were identified:

  • Ensuring all staff in the early learning and childcare setting are equally involved in the process of change

  • Continuing to develop learning pathways which ensure children at primary stages receive their entitlement to a broad general education. This will support children in making the best possible progress across all areas of their learning.
