Draft Local Housing Strategy approved for public consultation.

East Lothian residents will be invited to give their views on the council’s plans for the delivery of housing and related services across the county after local councillors approved East Lothian’s draft Local Housing Strategy for public consultation.

The Housing (Scotland) Act 2001 requires all local authorities to prepare a Local Housing Strategy (LHS) for their area, supported by an assessment of housing need and demand. The council’s draft Local Housing Strategy sets out the strategy, priorities and plans for the delivery of housing and related services across East Lothian until 2023.

Local residents will be asked to give their feedback on the draft strategy which sets out a range of actions to address identified housing issues across both social and private sector housing. The wide ranging strategy also addresses homelessness, fuel poverty, energy efficiency, housing quality and support, and specialist provision for people with particular needs.

Cllr Jim Goodfellow, Cabinet spokesperson for Housing and Community Wellbeing, said:

“We know that the population of East Lothian is not only growing, but it is changing. People are not only living longer, but their needs are changing too. We don’t just need to increase the supply of housing, and affordable housing in particular, but we need to ensure that we have in place a wider range of specialist housing that will enable people to live independently for longer, where that is appropriate.

“But getting housing ‘right’ is not just about developing enough good quality affordable housing, it is much more than that. It’s also about ensuring that new housebuilding fosters good community relations, as well as improving the existing housing stock and making sure that we can do all we can to reduce carbon emissions and tackle fuel poverty.

“This strategy takes into account not only key housing issues, but takes into consideration the aspirations and needs of local people and communities. Our vision is that by 2023 we will have healthy and sustainable homes in vibrant communities that meet increasing levels of need, will reduce inequalities and improve wellbeing for all across all stages of people’s lives. We have already consulted widely with local people and our partners, and this consultation will give people a further opportunity to give us their feedback before we publish our final document in the spring.”

The new draft East Lothian Local Housing Strategy will be available to view on the council’s consultation hub at www.eastlothianconsultations.co.uk from Friday 19 January, with comments invited in writing only, until Friday 9 March.
