Curlers receive Saltire

A group of East Lothian curlers received a very special Saltire flag to present to a group of Canadian rivals in the run-up to an epic battle!

The flag, which has been flying at Athelstaneford, home of the Saltire, was presented to the group by East Lothian Provost John McMillan on behalf of the Scottish Flag Trust.

The curlers are about to compete with Canadian rivals in the Strathcona Cup, which is hotly contested in games throughout Scotland once every five years, alternating between Scotland and Canada.

Dave Munro, President of the East Lothian Province of the Royal Calendonian Curling Club, accepted the flag along with representatives from the eight East Lothian clubs that make up the Province.

It will now be presented to the visiting Canadian curlers when they play for the Strathcona Cup, during the concluding stages in Edinburgh on 31st January to mark the contest and the strong links between Scottish and Canadian curlers.

Dave, who was chosen to compete in Canada in 2013, said:

“The presentation of this flag to the Canadians will be very well received, particularly since it is being presented from East Lothian, a region which has had such significant input into the history and development of the sport of curling. The sport doesn’t, in my opinion, receive the coverage and plaudits it deserves, so to have East Lothian Council and the Scottish Flag Trust making such a thoughtful action to show their understanding of the importance of the sport is greatly appreciated.”

Provost John McMillan said:

“It was a privilege to meet some of our elite East Lothian curlers and to present the flag to them. Of course, I wish both nations well in the forthcoming competition but I sincerely hope our Scottish province teams, and particularly East Lothian of course, do us proud! It’s been fascinating to hear about the strong links between Scotland and Canada and in particular in relation to the sport of curling, which is celebrated in this competition.”
