A £263 million investment in capital projects across East Lothian over the next five years will secure benefits local communities.

This will include the new or upgraded community and sports facilities and the local environment.

Around £1 million has been earmarked for sports centre refurbishment and equipment. There are resources for sports pitches, around £1m million allocated for Port Seton Community Centre and almost £1.5 million for Whitecraig Community Centre.

Coastal protection/flood projects – including Musselburgh Flood Protection Scheme and also at Dunbar’s East Beach – will benefit from a £17.3 million investment.

Haddington Corn Exchange will benefit from an £850,000 investment while £400,000 is earmarked for East Saltoun School/Community Hall.

Meanwhile, almost £1.5 million has been set aside for a project to improve community access at the Brunton Hall, Musselburgh.

There is almost £1.5 million towards a capital project which will see Haddington Police Station relocated to John Muir House and a collaborative hub established to further strengthen partnership working between community police, fire service and council employees.

Depute Council Leader Norman Hampshire said:

“Community facilities play a vital role at the heart of towns and villages across East Lothian. We’re really looking forward to seeing progress with projects such as the new Whitecraig Community Centre. There is also investment in facilities in Haddington and East Saltoun which I’m sure will be warmly welcomed.

“Our capital investment programme will also benefit the local environment, with resources for coastal protection/flood protection projects and new waste bins.”

The six Area Partnerships will continue to receive devolved budgets from the council’s revenue budget to fund local improvements and to help reduce inequalities.

Examples of initiatives funded so far by the Area Partnerships include new footpaths to promote active travel, lunch clubs to help reduce social isolation, holiday activity clubs and community cookery sessions.
