Haddington Community Shelter Consultation

Published Wednesday 21st February 18

Haddington and Lammermuir Area Partnership has been working with East Lothian Council and local community partners to identify a suitable location in Haddington for a community shelter.

This has arisen following a request from young people for a place where they could meet to socialise in Haddington and was first raised when the Area Partnership began developing their Area Plan in 2014. The request was duly noted as a potential outcome in the Area Plan and then gained further momentum during the construction of the skatepark on Whittingehame Drive in 2016.

In early 2017, a survey of some local young people was carried out which identified the area around Tynebank Road, Haddington as being their preferred location. East Lothian Council has also agreed that this is their preferred location for a shelter.

The Area Partnership has previously supported the design, build and installation of a shelter in and is now seeking to install a similar shelter on the grass at the junction of Tynebank Road and the road entrance leading to the Scout Hut in Haddington.

The proposed shelter will be similar to the Garvald shelter but, instead of being enclosed by virtue of 5 sides and one opening, the shape of the Haddington version will be based around 3 enclosed sides and 3 roof panels meaning the visibility factor of use will increase by 150%. The shelter is made from 3 x 5’ wide panels so, as this is a semicircle shelter the opening at the front will likely be 10’ approx. The height of the roof will range from 6’ at the rear where the seats are to 8’ at the front. It is proposed that this shelter will be for the use by the wider community, and not just young people.

At this stage it is planned to install the shelter at the proposed location for a temporary period of around 7 months. Once this period has elapsed a review will be carried out to decide whether or not to proceed to permanent installation, at which point planning permission for such will be sought if required. In advance of this, the Area Partnership and East Lothian Council are keen to consult the wider community on this  proposal.
